Tinnitus and Stress

This book provides up-to-date scientific information on the pathways by which psychosocial stress can affect the auditory system and describes current approaches to the management of patients with stress-related tinnitus. The latest evidence is presented on aspects such as the role of stress hormones in auditory function, the effects of allostatic load, circadian sensitivity to auditory trauma, and the association between stress-related biomarkers and tinnitus. The clinically oriented chapters discuss psychometric instruments of value in the tinnitus clinic and present stress-related tinnitus treatment protocols and outcome measures. It is widely acknowledged that the tinnitus percept acts as a stressor. However, it is also now evident that psychosocial stress can play a causative role in tinnitus and that the impact varies according to the level, duration, and quality of the stress. Assessment of the types and levels of stress in tinnitus patients before, during, and after treatment is therefore very important. Healthcare professionals attending tinnitus patients will benefit from the information that this book provides on the relationship between tinnitus and stress and from the practical guidance that it offers.

Data Mining of Audiology Data

This research describes the data mining of a large set of patient records from a large NHS (National Health Services) hearing aid clinic, UK. As typical of medical data in general, these audiology records are heterogeneous, containing Audiograms, Structured Text (such as date of birth, gender, and diagonosis) and Unstructured Text (specific observations made about each patient in a free-text). This audiology data set is unique, as it contains records of patients prescribed with both ITE and BTE hearing aids. ITE hearing aids are not generally available on the British National Health Service in England. However, both types of aids are prescribed at this large NHS, UK facility (whose data is used in this research), which is an important feature of this data. There are two research questions for this research: 1. Which factors influence the choice of ITE (in the ear) as opposed to BTE (behind the ear) hearing aids? 2. For patients diagnosed with tinnitus (ringing in the ear), which factors influence the decision whether to fit a tinnitus masker (a gentle sound source, worn like a hearing aid, designed to drown out tinnitus)?

Whiplash Injuries

The new edition of this book provides an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of whiplash-associated disorders, focusing in particular on a functional approach to clinical and instrumental diagnosis and rehabilitative treatment. It fully reflects the changes in our understanding of whiplash injuries since the first edition, and in particular the increased awareness that whiplash is a whole-body trauma in which forces act progressively from the lumbar region to the brain, through the cervical spine. Detailed attention is paid to the functional connections between the sense organs of the inner ear, the sympathetic system, and the spine with a view to optimizing diagnosis and treatment. It is explained how various treatment options can be employed to best effect in patients with different symptoms, following, but updating, the well-known Quebec Task Force guidelines. Underestimated aspects such as positional vertigo, somatic tinnitus, temporomandibular disorders, and back pain are also considered. This book will be an invaluable tool in everyday clinical practice for all who are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of whiplash injury.
